Every January 28, Data Protection Day is celebrated—a key date to reflect on the challenges Central America faces in cybersecurity. The rapid digital acceleration of recent years has led to a significant increase in cyberattacks, exposing vulnerabilities in organizations and individual users across the region.

According to the Global Cybersecurity Index 2020 from the International Telecommunication Union, Central America still has much progress to make in legal, technical, organizational, capacity-building, and cooperative measures. The region experienced a 61% rise in phishing attacks during 2021, according to Sophos, while 74% of companies fell victim to cyberattacks in the same year.

For instance, Costa Rica reported that 70% of consumers were affected by cyber fraud, and Panama saw a 60% growth in cyberattacks, highlighting the growing threats. The most affected sectors include manufacturing (18%), retail (11%), and technology (9%), with additional incidents reported in healthcare, education, and government.

Common Threats

The KPMG survey “A Triple Threat in the Americas 2022” identified the main vulnerabilities faced by organizations in the region:

  • Phishing: 44%
  • Scamming: 33%
  • Spyware or malware: 22%
  • Ransomware: 20%

Furthermore, the report indicates that organizations may take up to a month to detect a cyberattack, amplifying its potential consequences.

What Can Be Done?

To address this situation, it is crucial to adopt cutting-edge measures to strengthen data security. Key actions include:

  1. Implementing advanced cybersecurity solutions: Use intelligent monitoring software and threat detection systems.
  2. Ongoing training: Educate employees on identifying suspicious emails and safe practices.

3. Multi-factor authentication (MFA): Add multiple layers of protection for accessing critical systems.

4. Incident response plans: Establish clear protocols to contain and mitigate damage during an attack.

5. Constant updates: Ensure all operating systems and applications are secured with the latest patches.

Individual Actions to Protect Your Data

On a personal level, every user can contribute to strengthening cybersecurity by adopting responsible habits:

  • Create unique and secure passwords for each service.
  • Configure privacy settings on social networks and apps.
  • Use updated antivirus software and secure networks.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited emails or suspicious links.

Data Protection Day reminds us that privacy and digital security are not optional but essential in today’s environment. Through joint efforts by governments, businesses, and users, Central America can move towards a safer and more reliable digital ecosystem.
